How to Wax a Hardwood Floor

When your hardwood floors are dull, dinted, or dirty, they subtract from the beauty of your home. • To protect yourself from the vapors in wax solvents, always use gloves and a dust mask.
  • Before applying solid paste wax, get into a comfortable kneeling posture, since it must be done by hand (knee pads ought to help). If you’re using liquid wax, stand still.
  • If you’re applying solid wax, you’ll need a putty knife and a soft, lint-free cloth. For the fastest application of liquid wax, use a sponge mop.
  • Using the putty knife, scoop a spoonful of solid wax onto a soft, lint-free cloth. Pour or squeeze a tablespoon of liquid wax straight onto the hardwood floor from the container or bottle, then dip the mop head into the wax.
  • Spread a thin coating of solid wax or liquid wax using a sponge mop in one- to two-foot portions with the cloth. Wax hardwood floors in the direction of the floorboards, starting in one corner of the room and moving towards an exit. When your initial batch of wax is gone, add more to the cloth or the floor until the whole room is coated.
  • Allow 10 minutes to an hour for the initial application to dry, depending on the product.
  • Apply additional coats as directed by the manufacturer, letting each dry in between.

Solid paste wax solidifies into a stronger layer of protection, thus one application over finished wood or two coats over raw wood is typically adequate, but liquid wax normally requires two to three coats at the very least, since each coat is considerably thinner.
